The High-Level Political Forum is the United Nations’ central platform for follow-up and review of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). This year’s forum will be held at the United Nations Headquarters in New York from Tuesday, 7 July, to Thursday, 16 July, under the theme ‘Accelerated action and transformative pathways: Realizing the decade of action and delivery for sustainable development’.
On Tuesday, 14 July, the UNESCO Institute for Lifelong Learning (UIL) together with the International Council for Adult Education (ICAE) and Bridge 47, a consortium of 15 European and global organizations that advocates for policies that reflect the importance of global citizenship education (GCED) for achieving the SDGs, will jointly host a virtual side event, ‘Global citizenship education – A response to a global crisis’.
By promoting better health and well-being and supporting the development of knowledge and skills needed to cope with new challenges, lifelong learning, which includes GCED, offers solutions to some of the problems caused by the COVID-19 crisis.
The upcoming side event will explore ways in which GCED, one of the targets of SDG 4 on education, can help with future global challenges – for example, by raising awareness about climate change and environmental degradation and how they encourage the spread of new diseases. Speakers and participants will look at how GCED can support transformative education, critical thinking, (media) literacy, and education for human rights and civic participation in times of health crises.
Time: Tuesday, 14 July 2020, 8:00–9:00 (EDT)
