At the occasion of World Philosophy Day 2017, UNESCO is partnering with the 16th International Encounters on New Philosophical Practices (NPP), which provide a forum for everyone who is interested in the practice of philosophy in all its forms, including the least traditional.
This edition will be co-organized by the UNESCO Chair "Practicing Philosophy with Children: An Educational Basis for Intercultural Dialogue and Social Transformation" and the Laboratory of Research in Practical and Applied Philosophy (LRPh.PA) of the University of Aegean, at the University of Aegean (Faculty of Humanities), in Rhodes (Greece), on 18 and 19 November 2017.
The Encounters enable reflection on how to make philosophy accessible to as many people as possible, outside its traditional spaces and modes of expression – through primary and secondary schools, hospitals, prisons, cafés, evening classes, public libraries, theatres, cinema, businesses and other organizations, etc. Researchers, teachers, practitioners and the simply curious are all welcome to come and share their ideas.
The program is based on the articulation between theory and practice around philosophy-art experiences. The challenge is to see practitioners and theoreticians co-construct on the basis of practical exercises.
Each team presentation will be illuminated by a "training dimension": how to share these experiences in the context of training in animation of philosophical practices? The training will be conducted by Nathalie Frieden (University of Friborg, MER Emeritus / Switzerland) and Véronique Delille (Asphodèle: Think / Open, Trainers of Trainers / France).
The program also includes experiments in philosophy-art.
Previous editions of the International Encounters were successfully hosted at UNESCO, in collaboration with partners including the “Philolab” association and the University of Nantes. They laid the basis for the UNESCO Chair on Philosophical Practices with Children, established in 2016 at the University of Nantes. The Chairholder, Dr Edwige Chirouter, is the overall coordinator of the Encounters.
