Every year around 27 January, UNESCO pays tribute to the memory of the victims of the Holocaust and reaffirms its commitment to counter antisemitism, racism and all other forms of intolerance that may lead to group targeted violence. This year’s International Day is placed under the United Nations theme: 'Holocaust Remembrance and Education: Our Shared Responsibility'.

 

27 January marks the anniversary of the liberation of the Nazi German Concentration and Extermination Camp of Auschwitz-Birkenau by the Soviet troops in 1945 and was officially proclaimed International Day of Commemoration in Memory of the Victims of the Holocaust by the United Nations General Assembly.

 

Celebrations will start on 24 January at 7 pm with the premiere of “Les quatre soeurs” (part 1: “Le serment d’Hippocrate”), directed by Claude Lanzmann In the presence of the Director.

 

On 25 January at 3 pm, a round table on “Holocaust Remembrance and Education: Our Shared Responsibility” will gather Serge Klarsfeld (tbc), Henri Rousso, historian, CNRS, Sandrine Lefranc, sociologist, CNRS (tbc), Floriane Hohenberg, Director, International Tracing Service (Germany).
At 7 pm, the official ceremony will take place in the presence of UNESCO’s Director General, the President of Shoah Memorial and the Permanent Delegate of Israel. The video “Between listening and telling” will be presented. The ceremony will also feature a witness testimony by Marceline Loridan Levans. A concert by Ariela duo, Sigrid Hagn (piano) and Janina Ibel (violin) will close the ceremony.

 

In parallel to the event, two exhibitions will be presented at UNESCO Headquarters:
- Shoah Memorial – La Nuit de Cristal, from 22 January to 3 February
- The collection of the International Tracing Service (Memory of the World), from 16 January to 29 February
