UNESCO’s Futures of Education: Learning to Become initiative aims to catalyze a global debate on how knowledge, education and learning need to be reimagined.  The fact that we live in a world of increasing complexity, uncertainty, and precarity has has become undeniably evident because of the COVID-19 crisis.  Events around the globe are being shifted online, including a keynote panel to be held at the Comparative and International Education Society’s (CIES) annual conference.  Originally scheduled to take place in Miami it will now take place online on 24 March (10:00 - 11:30 EST) at the following link https://asu.zoom.us/j/176838142

UNESCO’s new flagship initiative is mobilizing the many rich ways of being and knowing worldwide in order to leverage humanity’s collective intelligence. It relies on a broad, open consultative process that involves youth, educators, civil society, governments, business and other stakeholders. The work is being guided by a high-level International Commission of thought-leaders from diverse fields, chaired by the President of Ethiopia, H.E. Ms Sahle-Work Zewde. In November 2021 the Commission will publish a report designed to share a forward-looking vision of what education and learning might become and offer a policy agenda.

The vCIES 2020 session will include as panelists several members of the International Commission who are well known and active members of the comparative and international education community. This includes Arjun Appadurai (NYU and Hertie School Berlin), Karen Mundy (OISE, University of Toronto), António Nóvoa (University of Lisbon), and Fernando Reimers (Harvard Graduate School of Education).  They will share their perspectives and engage with the audience on how knowledge and learning can shape the future of humanity and the planet.
