Online, Brazil

On 6 July 2020 UNESCO will organize for the first time ever an online Training of Trainers on the development of intercultural competencies for UN staff in Brazil who works with social and healthcare workers.

The online training aims to actively harness the potential of the innovative and accessible Story Circles methodology in the context of Covid-19, constituting a network of facilitators in the UN system and healthcare systems able to build the intercultural capacities of healthcare workers in local communities.

As the Covid-19 has had an unprecedented impact in Brazil, vulnerable populations, including refugees, migrants, minorities and indigenous peoples have being exposed to a disproportionate risk of infection. Responding to this challenge requires the building of resilience of social and healthcare workers, reinforcing their adaptability to different cultural contexts and needs, with the longer-term objective of building back better healthcare services and consolidating sustainable societies.

The training will introduce UN staff to the intercultural Story Circles designed by UNESCO in cooperation with Professor Darla Deardorff, a leading researcher from Duke University (USA) and globally renowned authority on intercultural education. The methodology, piloted by UNESCO across the world, has proved to be a highly effective and participatory tool for strengthening intercultural dialogue as a mechanism for conflict prevention/resolution and for reinforcing shared values. It is therefore an effective and highly meaningful approach, which colleagues working in many different domains may consider using in their projects.
