Media and Information Literacy Curriculum for Teachers Fourth Regional Consultative Meeting (West and Central Africa)

In 2011, UNESCO spearheaded a process that led to the preparation of a model Media and Information Literacy (MIL) Curriculum for Teachers that includes content covering information, media, and technological competencies. Notwithstanding, it is necessary to initiate a second round of international dialogue around this crucial resource. This is increasingly needed in light of new developments in the digital domain and the exponential rise in disinformation.

 

The First International Consultative Meeting on MIL Curriculum for Teachers was held in September 2019, in Belgrade, Serbia. The outcome of this Consultative Meeting is the Belgrade Recommendations on Draft Global Standards for Media and Information Literacy Curricula Guidelines.

 

UNESCO is continuing its foresight with stakeholders in Africa. The Fourth Regional Consultative Meeting (West and Central Africa) on Media and Information Literacy Curriculum for Teachers has the follow goals:

- Collect contributions for updating UNESCO's MIL Programme for Teachers and improving the Draft Global Standards for MIL Guidelines;

- Formulate recommendations for the promotion of MIL in Africa.

 

Participants mainly come from academia, teacher training institutions, youth organisations and the media sector.

 

In 2011, UNESCO spearheaded a process that led to the preparation of a model Media and Information Literacy (MIL) Curriculum for Teachers that includes content covering information, media, and technological competencies.

 

The preparation followed a comprehensive process, which consisted of two international expert group meetings and a series of regional consultations including the training of trainers in Southern Africa, Latin America and the Caribbean, and Southern Asia. Over the years, teachers, NGOs, secondary schools, universities, development organizations, and civil society stakeholders have used this publication.

 

This is one of the key resources of UNESCO’s actions on Media and Information Literacy (MIL). It is highly demanded, exists in twelve languages, and has informed the development of further MIL resources by various partners across the world. Notwithstanding, it is necessary to initiate a second round of international dialogue around this crucial resource. This is increasingly needed in light of new developments in the digital domain including artificial intelligence, the emergence of new concepts such as global citizenship and digital citizenship education, and the exponential rise in disinformation. Enabling people’s critical thinking and digital wellness through MIL therefore becomes urgent.
