At a time when global skills are in critical demand, the 2020 AFS Global Conference is set to host the a virtual global launch of the results of the Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) 2018 Global Competence Assessment and explore their implications for students, educators, policymakers and other education stakeholders.

Previously scheduled to take place in Singapore, the Conference will now happen online due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The agenda will be transformed into an interactive virtual event for the education community highlighting the voices of learners alongside educators on 22 and 23 October 2020.  The Conference is organized by AFS Intercultural Programs (AFS) in collaboration with the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD).

Requests for Conference invitations can now be submitted at conference.afs.org.

The COVID-19 pandemic is a reminder of how urgently we need to educate young people to understand different perspectives, interact respectfully with others, and take responsible action toward collective well-being. In 2018, PISA, the global yardstick for success in education, addressed for the first time global competence and its role for quality, equity, and effectiveness in education, after setting the standards for assessing the 15-year-old’s reading, math, and science skills worldwide.

The 2020 AFS Global Conference will offer attendees an exclusive opportunity to participate in the virtual global launch of the inaugural PISA Global Competence Assessment results and take an active role in the live discussion sessions. Andreas Schleicher, Director for Education and Skills at the OECD and a renowned expert on education, will explain further how the PISA results impact national education systems, showcase some of the best practices observed around the world, and suggest actions that are urgently needed to improve how educators prepare the next generation to thrive in our globalized world.

Leading up to the Conference and PISA results in October, AFS and the OECD will organize a series of webinars to discuss global competence in education today. The first webinar in the series titled, “When global events expose global needs” is planned for Wednesday, 27 May, and will explore how school systems are helping learners develop competencies to address interconnected challenges like the current coronavirus epidemic. Register now to secure your spot at this webinar (at 10 AM ET and 8 PM ET).
