On 28 and 29 October 2020, the Global Alliance for Literacy within the Framework of Lifelong Learning (GAL) will meet virtually to assess the unprecedented challenges brought by COVID-19 on youth and adult literacy in its 29 member countries.
It will review national education response plans and strategies in the context of the pandemic and explore how new partnerships, including with the UNESCO-led Global Education Coalition, and with the new Associate Members of the Alliance, can advance youth and adult literacy in GAL countries. A ministerial panel will give selected countries an opportunity to present their countries’ strategies for ensuring access to literacy provision during the pandemic.
UNESCO launched the Global Alliance for Literacy within the Framework of Lifelong Learning in 2016 to advance global literacy efforts as part of the United Nations’ 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. GAL fosters and coordinates a partnership of 29 countries towards concerted action on youth and adult literacy. As Secretariat of GAL, the UNESCO Institute for Lifelong Learning coordinates its work.
