The United Nations General Assembly Resolution (Ref.: A/74/396, 18 December 2019) proclaimed the International Decade of Indigenous Languages starting from 2022 to 2032. The UNGA (A/RES/74/135) invited UNESCO to serve as the lead agency for the International Decade, in collaboration with UNDESA and other relevant agencies. The Resolution also invited Member States to consider establishing national mechanisms with adequate funding for the successful implementation of the International Decade of Indigenous Languages (IDIL2022-2032) in partnership with indigenous peoples, and invites indigenous peoples, as custodians of their own languages, to initiate and develop appropriate measures for the implementation of the International Decade.

The side-event will be an opportunity to contribute to the ongoing consultations on the elaboration of the Global Action Plan for the organization of the International Decade of Indigenous Languages, share good practices that Indigenous People have implemented, and propose steps to be taken to curb the critical loss of indigenous languages.

Indigenous Peoples comprise over 6% of the world’s population, yet Indigenous languages account a majority of world’s 7,000 languages.  The loss of a language represents a loss of environmental, technological, social, economic, and cultural knowledge. The time is now for all stakeholders to recognize a role of languages for development and further commit, protect and invest in the current and future generations of Indigenous language users. The investment in inclusive and equitable education and learning environments through media is essential as it contributes to the revitalization, transmission and promotion of languages and traditional knowledge.

Objectives of the side event

●      Update stakeholders on progress made, and contribute to the elaboration of the Global Action Plan for the organization of the International Decade;

●      Explore the role of community media in advancing language, cultural and education is integrated into the national policies and mechanisms.

●      To demonstrate how investing in education and media help to preserve and promote Indigenous languages, and foster the next generation of Indigenous speakers.
