The COVID-19 pandemic has resulted in an unprecedented education crisis. The uncertainty around health risks and demand for infection prevention and control measures such as physical distancing have led to massive and recurrent school closures. Governments are grappling with the complexity of providing education continuity remotely and how to enable children to safely return to school after lockdowns are lifted.

  1. To provide relevant, effective and timely support to Member States, UNESCO and UNICEF have commissioned Cambridge Education to undertake the Situation Analysis on the Effects of and Responses to COVID-19 in the Education Sector in Asia . The analysis was conducted from April 2020 to February 2021 with the following objectives:
  2. assess and estimate the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic on the education sector and stakeholders in the East Asia, Southeast Asia and South Asia sub-regions;
  3. examine policy and financial implications on progress towards achieving SDG 4-Education 2030; and
  4. identify examples of promising responses and strategies in education and associated social sectors, which can be shared with other countries.

This Situation Analysis is partly funded by the Global Partnership for Education (GPE) under the UNESCO-UNICEF-World Bank joint project on Global and Regional Response to the COVID-19 Pandemic.

To present key findings of the sub-regional analysis, two sub-regional webinars will be organized:

  1. South Asia (9 March)
  2. East Asia and Southeast Asia (11 March)

The webinars will raise awareness and provide opportunities for government officials, development partners and other education stakeholders to discuss key findings, lessons learned and recommendations from the Situation Analysis. This will also be an opportunity for countries to exchange ideas and experiences.
