UNESCO Beijing Cluster Office, in close consultation with the Asia-Pacific Center of Education for International Understanding (APCEIU), jointly organize a virtual consultation for East Asian countries on Global Citizenship Education (GCED). The aim of the consultation is to review the current progress of GCED implementation at the country level, to share and exchange knowledge and experiences related to GCED initiatives, and to identify strategies to strengthen collaboration among the cluster countries. The consultation is expected to contribute to the establishment of a solid sub-regional mechanism to promote, strengthen and institutionalize GCED in the cluster countries.

Global Citizenship Education (GCED) is a strategic priority area of UNESCO’s Education Sector programme and builds on the work of Peace and Human Rights Education and culture of peace and non-violence. GCED has become an integral part of the global education agenda in order to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals and has now become increasingly important since our world is more interconnected than ever before.

UNESCO has established strategic collaboration with the UNESCO Category II Centre (APCEIU) in Seoul, Republic of Korea in advancing and promoting GCED at the global, regional and national levels through policy dialogues, capacity building and knowledge sharing in GCED. In close collaboration with APCEIU and the Government of the Republic of Korea, UNESCO has organized various global, regional, sub-regional and national consultations and conferences to further advance the GCED global agenda and to strengthen the capacity of education stakeholders in order to achieve SDG 4.7.

The GCED Consultation on 17 June 2021 for East Asian countries covered by UNESCO Beijing Cluster Office aims to strengthen policy dialogue and sharing of best practices in GCED in response to the global and regional recommendations to scale up the implementation of GCED at country levels. Around a total of 20-25experts, practitioners and officials from the Ministries of Education, the National Commissions for UNESCO, education institutions, and civil society organizations will gather online for the consultation.

The consultation will review the current progress of GCED implementation in the cluster countries; learn the global GCED initiatives and linkages with Education for Sustainable Development; monitor GCED implementation; discuss the indicator in target 4.7 and regional updates in GCED; share and exchange countries’ knowledge and experiences; discuss country-level GCED programmes and initiatives, and identify strategies to strengthen cross-country collaboration and joint activities. It seeks to contribute to the establishment of a sub-regional mechanism to promote, strengthen and institutionalize GCED in the cluster countries.
