Background

A whole-of-society response will be needed to address the evolving human crisis precipitated by the COVID-19 pandemic. Governments face the task of balancing short-term needs with the long-term vision of a sustainable, green and inclusive future. It is clear a return to business as usual will not serve a region that is already off-track to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals. Keeping focus on the 2030 Agenda as a beacon in these turbulent times is now more important than ever.

In conjunction with the 7th Asia-Pacific Forum on Sustainable Development (APFSD), ESCAP, ADB and UNDP have jointly issued a report which identifies key strategies to enable a shift away from business as usual. Fast-tracking the SDGs: Driving Asia-Pacific Transformations bases its recommendations on analysis of past trends. It points to countries which may be among the best equipped for this challenge and allows each country to compare its speed of progress with others in the region. Among others, the report shows that progress on building sustainable and just economies is highly linked to progress across the six transformative entry points. However, the Asia-Pacific region is furthest behind in this entry point. The report also identifies several countries with special needs among the fast movers in the region and common strategies in countries that are fast-tracking progress.
