UNESCO New Delhi, the Consulate General of Sweden in Mumbai, Wikimedia, and Idobro are organizing the #WIKIGAP-WIKI4WOMXN virtual edit-a-thon with the intention of promoting better representation of women in the digital sphere through the development of women profiles on Wikipedia, from 3pm – 5.30pm on 12 March 2021.

The #WIKI4WOMXN initiative invites everyone to celebrate and honour women who have excelled in the fields of education, science, culture, social and human sciences, communication and information. Last year’s campaign helped to create, expand, and translate 286 Wikipedia articles related to women who play important roles in these respective spheres. By supporting the creation of these online profiles, we are a step towards giving women the digital existence they deserve.

Now is the time to step up our efforts and take advantage of digital opportunities to ensure that they empower women. The WIKI4WOMEN initiative plays an important role in recognizing the achievement of influential women towards key targets of the Sustainable Development Goals.

Considering the ongoing pandemic and prioritizing the safety of the participants, the event will be organized virtually. It will feature speakers from UNESCO, the Swedish Consulate, Wikimedia, Idobro, and CIS-A2K, followed by  training? The edit-a-thon will include over 80 participants, with students from various colleges in Punjab, Gujarat, and Maharashtra, among others.

Throughout the world, women continue to make significant contributions to society, but they remain often invisible in the digital sphere. Although more than 25,000 Wikipedia profiles are created every day, less than 1 in 5 biographies are written about women.  With active participation and solidarity, this trend can be overturned. Thus, by writing the stories of overlooked women, gender equality can ultimately be achieved.

UNESCO considers gender equality as a fundamental human right, a building block for social justice and an economic necessity. It is a critical factor for the achievement of all internationally agreed development goals, as well as a goal in and of itself.
