Regional Benchmarks for SDG 4 in Central Asia to be discussed online on April 29. The meeting will be of use for officials from the ministries of education, national statistical offices, and experts on education. Pre-registration is required.

Central Asia Regional Technical Consultation Meeting on Regional Benchmarks will be held by UNESCO Almaty and UNESCO Bangkok with the technical support from UNESCO Institute for Statistics. 

Education is an important part of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) that the states are committed to achieving by 2030. SDG 4 aims to “ensure inclusive and equitable quality education and promote lifelong learning opportunities for all.” The realization of the Goals in different countries depends on the socio-economic and cultural context and is not unambiguously interpreted. Therefore, a national approach to the establishment of indicators is important.

In 2019, UNESCO agreed on a set of 7 indicators that will measure the achievement of the results. These indicators include minimum learning proficiency in reading and mathematics, completion rate, out-of-school rate, participation rate one year before primary, percentage of trained teachers, education expenditure as a share of budget and GDP, equity indicator.

The extraordinary session of the Global Education Meeting in October 2020 reminded countries of the commitment “to … propose relevant and realistic benchmarks of key SDG 4 indicators for subsequent monitoring”.

At the meeting on April 29, UNESCO Institute for Statistics (UIS) will propose interim benchmarks to help support regions to develop regional and national benchmarks following various approaches. The regional partners and Member States need to look carefully into these benchmark indicators and their values and their relevancy for the regional and national level.
