Deconstructing Misinformation, Hate speech, and Racism for the Promotion of Cultural Diversity, Peace Building and Sustainable Development during COVID-19 Pandemic

The objective will be to identify and discuss issues, best practices and challenges related to misinformation, hate speech, and racism and identify effective measures, including the promotion of cultural diversity and intercultural dialogue, that can be adopted to counteract and mitigate during the COVID-19 pandemic.

 

It will also aim at increasing awareness among stakeholders and citizens on the importance of media and information literacy to deconstruct misinformation, hate speech, and racist nuances in order to foster cultural diversity, peace building and sustainable development during the COVID-19 pandemic.

 

The Webinar will bring together experts and practitioners in the region to identify and discuss issues, best practices, and challenges experienced by media professionals and journalists related to misinformation, hate speech, racism for peace building and sustainable development during the COVID-19 pandemic. It will also propose effective measures that can be adopted to counteract and mitigate misinformation, hate speech, and racism, in order to promote cultural diversity and intercultural dialogue for peace building during and after COVID-19 pandemic.

 

The webinars expected outcomes include


• Increased awareness among the participants on how to prevent further propagation of the COVID-19; participants empowered to be an agent of change for the dissemination of accurate information about the COVID-19;
• Increased awareness of issues, best practices and challenges related to misinformation, hate speech, and racism during the COVID-19 pandemic;
• Increased awareness of available tools, networks and resources to promote cultural diversity and intercultural dialogue;
• Increased awareness of measures that can be adopted to counteract and mitigate misinformation, hate speech, and racism; and strengthened collaboration among UNESCO sectors and among UN agencies to counteract and mitigate misinformation, hate speech, and racism during the COVID-19 pandemic.

 

This event has been organized in collaboration with the Culture Sector and close cooperation with UNESCO National Commissions, UNCG, Media Regulators, Journalists Associations from Eastern Africa Region. The key experts participating in the webinar are drawn from representatives of Government, Media organizations, practitioners, journalists, academia and UN Agencies.
