Using our annual Behind the Lines political cartooning exhibition, learn how to engage students with our democracy and build their media literacy and critical thinking skills at the same time.

Political cartoons are an accessible way for students to develop media literacy skills in the classroom. Unpacking cartoons develops critical thinking, consideration of author intent/bias, exposes them to social issues, democratic rights and their freedoms and responsibilities as active citizens. This 2021 TQI accredited workshop is aligned to the Australian Curriculum.

At MoAD, we’ve been working with the Australian Media Literacy Alliance to explore how young people engage with news media. Developing skills in media literacy and critical thinking is vital to help unpack news, identify reliable sources and make informed decisions to then contribute positively to our communities.

Note - each booked TQI session occurs over 2 separate dates, one week apart – a 60 minute connection on each day. This allows teachers to implement learning from the first connection and to reflect on it during the second. The program caters for primary and secondary teacher audiences and is aligned to the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers (see below).
