Join the Pulitzer Center on April 8 at 4:00pm EDT for a conversation with Teacher Fellows Jairus Hallums and Nikysha Gilliam. They will share how they leveraged global, underreported news stories to foster student inquiry around representation, identity, and community, and tips for navigating these themes in your own classroom.

Gilliam is a native of Pontiac, Michigan, and a high school educator. A graduate of the University of Michigan with a degree in English, and a masters in educational administration from California State University, Northridge, Gilliam is a former Fulbright Fellow and a current doctoral student at Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles, California. She has been teaching for 23 years and this year teaches ninth and tenth-grade English and English Language Development. Her unit, Identity in the Time of Covid-19, explores how identity and community change in the face of crises and considers the role of the media in these changes.

Hallums teaches eighth-grade language arts in the metro Atlanta area. He received a bachelor’s degree in English from Winthrop University, and a masters of divinity from Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary. His areas of interest lie at the intersection of justice, pedagogy, theology, and critical theory. Hallums’ unit, Reframing the Gaze: Incorporating Joy into Our Truth-telling, offers a broader portrait of the experiences of marginalized people and reframes the narratives that are told about communities of color.

The Pulitzer Center’s Teacher Fellowship program is a paid, virtual program for a small cohort of educators who explore questions about global, systemic issues and media literacy with other passionate Fellows, award-winning journalists, and the Pulitzer Center education team. You can learn more about the experiences of our fall Fellows in Media, Misinformation, and the Pandemic: Celebrating Our Fall 2020 Teacher Fellows and Arts, Journalism, and Justice: Celebrating Our Fall 2020 Teacher Fellows, Review the units crafted by our fall teaching Fellows by visiting Media, Misinformation, and the Pandemic Teacher Fellowship Unit Plans and Arts, Journalism, and Justice Fall Teacher Fellowship Units.

This webinar is open to all, but is recommended for educators in the K-12 setting.
