In the framework of the 41st session of the General Conference, UNESCO will organize a hybrid side event on the Global Education Coalition in Action.

Objectives and expected outcomes are:

  • Present the Global Education Coalition achievements and its approach to the international education community, ministers and officials joining.
  • Network and initiate new initiatives of the Global Education Coalition in support of digital transformation.
  • Discuss the future of the Coalition to achieve SDG4 and where there could be opportunities for further engagement with Member States.

Almost two years since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic and unprecedented global school closures, 117 million students across 18 countries have yet to return to the classroom. Disruptions to classes and curriculums and school closures during the past two academic years have resulted in significant learning losses and drop-outs, disproportionately impacting the most vulnerable students.

Established in March 2020, shortly after the first school closures were seen, the Global Education Coalition is part of UNESCO’s efforts to mobilize support to ensure the continuity of learning around the world. With over 200 partners, the Coalition has been supporting the COVID-19 crisis response while also looking at ways to recover, build more resilient systems and reimagine education for the future.

Coalition partners are mobilized to actively support continuity of learning around three central flagships: Connectivity, Teachers, and Gender. Partners – from private sector players to academic institutions to multilaterals – come to the table with concrete commitments and offers which are made publicly available for stakeholders to consider. A mission approach has also been key to the Coalition success in achieving large-scale targets and to operationalize actions in over 100 countries.

As the annual meeting of the Coalition, this event will bring partners together to share their projects, successes, and learnings so far. This event will also be an opportunity to discuss the future of the Coalition and its next steps in supporting learning recovery, digital transformation and continuing to work towards SDG4.

If you wish to attend in person in Paris, please contact r.diakite@unesco.org. The COVID-19 testing requirement applies.
