World Teachers’ Day 2020 will be celebrated with a week-long series of virtual events, beginning on 5 October with the Opening Ceremony and the awarding of the 6th UNESCO Hamdan Prize for the Effectiveness of Teachers. Ending with the Closing Ceremony on 12 October, the week will feature a series of virtual national, regional and global events to celebrate this year’s theme: Teachers: Leading in crisis, reimagining the future. The virtual sessions provide the occasion to celebrate the teaching profession worldwide, take stock of achievements, and draw attention to the voices of teachers, who are at the heart of efforts to attain the global education target of leaving no one behind.

Held annually on 5 October since 1994, World Teachers’ Day commemorates the anniversary of the adoption of the 1966 ILO/UNESCO Recommendation concerning the Status of Teachers and the 1997 the Recommendation concerning the Status of Higher-Education Teaching Personnel. These normative standard-setting instruments set benchmarks regarding the rights and responsibilities of teachers and standards for their initial preparation and further education, recruitment, employment, and working conditions.
