UNESCO, the UN Special Rapporteur on freedom of religion or belief, and the UN Department for Global communications are organizing a panel discussion on the topic of “Addressing and preventing antisemitism through education” to mark the presentation of the Special Rapporteur’s report on combatting antisemitism to the UN General Assembly.

On 17 October 2019, the UN Special Rapporteur on freedom of religion or belief will present his report on “Combatting Antisemitism to Eliminate Discrimination and Intolerance Based on Religion or Belief” to the United Nations General Assembly. To mark this important step forward and to further mobilize Member States behind the need to address and prevent antisemitism globally, UNESCO, the Special Rapporteur and the UN Department of Global Communications are jointly organizing a panel discussion on the topic of “Addressing and preventing antisemitism through education” on 18 November at UN Headquarters in New York.

The event will open with welcome remarks by Melissa Fleming, United Nations Under-Secretary-General for Global Communications and Marie Paule Roudil, Director of UNESCO Liaison Office in New York and UNESCO Representative to the United Nations, followed by a keynote address by Irwin Cotler, former Justice Minister and Attorney General of Canada. The panel discussion will serve to highlight the important potential of education to address and prevent antisemitism, informed by expert opinions of Raffi Gregorian, Director and Deputy to the Under-Secretary-General at United Nations Office of Counter-Terrorism, Ahmed Shaheed, United Nations Special Rapporteur on freedom of religion or belief, Felice Gaer, Director of the Jacob Blaustein Institute for the Advancement of Human Rights, American Jewish Committee, Dina Wyler, Jewish Diplomatic Corps of the World Jewish Congress, and Mark Weitzman, Director of Government Affairs, Simon Wiesenthal Center.
