Celebration of the International Mother Language Day
Event Date:
Wed, 2018/02/21
Venue:
Manhiça District, Mozambique

Established in 1999 by UNESCO, the International Mother Language Day is celebrated yearly on February 21. In 2018 the celebration theme is: “Linguistic diversity and multilingualism count for sustainable development”.

Mozambique – where Portuguese is the official language – is a multicultural and multilingual country with more than 23 Mozambican languages. The majority of the Mozambican population, whose mother tongue is the main means of communication, mainly in rural areas, Portuguese is dominated by about 10.8% of the population only (INE, 2010). This fact contributes to the exclusion of considerable number citizens in access to education, information and various social and economic services.

In the present year, the central ceremony of celebration of the International Mother Language Day will take place in Maputo Province, in the District of Manhiça, at Escola Primária Completa “3 de Fevereiro”, with the presence of the Vice-Minister of the Ministry of Education and Human Development.
