24 October marks the kick-off of the Global Media and Information Literacy Week Feature Conference and Youth Forum. The eleventh annual celebration of Global Media and Information Literacy Week will take place from 24 to 31 October 2022, under the theme “Nurturing trust: A Media and Information Literacy Imperative”. The Feature Events are co-organized by UNESCO and Nigeria and will take place in Abuja. Participants can also join online.

The world is facing several challenges which have resulted in the erosion of trust and the consequent increase in distrust among people. It is thus imperative to equip every person in every corner of the world with essential competency of critical thinking through media and information literacy to be able to engage more discerningly with information online and offline. As stakeholders take decisive actions to integrate media and information literacy in digital spaces, these competencies can further nurture trust online and offline

The feature events will see participation from high-level speakers, including:

  • Ms Audrey Azoulay, Director-General, UNESCO
  • H.E. Mr Muhammadu Buhari, President, Federal Republic of Nigeria
  • Mr Tawfik Jelassi, Assistant Director-General for Communication and Information, UNESCO
  • H.R.H Princess, Rym al-Ali, Founder, Jordan Media Institute, Jordan
  • H.R.H. Princess Abze Djigma, Chair, H.R.H. Princess Abze Djigma Foundation, Burkina Faso

  • Ms Carla Barnett, Secretary-General, Chief Executive Officer, Caribbean Community and Commons Market
  • Mr Pornchai Danvivathana, Secretary-General, Asian Cooperation Dialogue
  • Mr Ulrik Vestergaard Knudsen, Deputy Secretary-General, Organization of Economic Cooperation and Development

Global Media and Information Literacy Week 2022 will host 47 sessions and highlight essential topics and spark discussion on how media and information literacy can help to nurture trust. The sub-themes of the feature events vary from using media and information literacy as a key to exercising fundamental human rights and stimulating dialogue and solidarity to facilitate interchange with NGOs, intergovernmental bodies, schools, and experts of various backgrounds on overarching issues and opportunities.

Individuals across the globe are invited to be part of this global celebration: Register here to participate in the Feature Events.

The High-Level Opening Session and the High-Level Plenary Session of Intergovernmental Bodies will take place in the Presidential Banquet Hall. The other sessions of the Global Media and Information Literacy Week 2022 will be held at Transcorp Hilton Hotel.

All stakeholders globally can also be part of this celebration by organizing online and offline local events or activities related to Media and Information Literacy in local community or region during the week. These events should be registered at here. It is not too late to get involved.

Celebrating Global Media and Information Literacy Champions

Every year, members of the International Steering Committee of the UNESCO Media and Information Literacy Alliance celebrates information, library, media and technology specialists, educators, artists, activists, researchers, policy makers, NGOs, associations, and other groups integrating media and information literacy in  innovative ways in their work and related activities. The Committee awards the Global Media and Information Literacy Awards to recognize their work. While this is not a UNESCO award, the Global Media and Information Literacy Awards are presented every year at the Global MIL Week feature conference. The call for nominations is still open: click here.

Global Media and Information Literacy Week, commemorated annually from 24 to 31 October, is a major occasion for stakeholders to review and celebrate the progress achieved towards media and information literacy for all.

Together with its Feature Events (International Media and Information Literacy and Intercultural Dialogue Conference and Youth Agenda Forum), Global Media and Information Literacy Week links up local events around the world to promote Media and Information Literacy connections across disciplines, professions, and borders.
