On 12 and 13 November 2020, UNESCO learning cities from around the globe will meet virtually to share strategies, experiences and challenges concerning citizenship education. The event is organized by the UNESCO learning cities of Larissa (Greece) and Yeonsu-Gu (Republic of Korea), supported by the UNESCO Institute for Lifelong Learning. Interested stakeholders are invited to join the event.

Citizenship education plays a crucial role in finding solutions to global and local challenges. It is essential in building bridges to a future that is safe, fair and inclusive, and key to promoting democratic participation at local level.

At the conference, renowned experts will present on various topics related to citizenship education, such as environmental sustainability, human rights and democracy, participation of vulnerable groups, the link to the digital world, culture and local traditions, and open a debate with participants. During the conference, a youth forum will take on the theme of youth and democracy.

The UNESCO Global Network of Learning Cities (GNLC) was launched in 2013. It is an international policy-oriented network supporting local governments to develop lifelong learning strategies providing inspiration, expertise and best practice. In 2019, seven thematic clusters were established as part of the UNESCO strategy 2019–2021, one of which is citizenship education
