Think tank meeting: Placing citizenship education within a lifelong learning perspective: From research to action

The UNESCO Institute for Lifelong Learning (UIL), with the support of the Asian Pacific Centre for Education of International Understanding (APCEIU), will host a think tank meeting titled Placing citizenship education within a lifelong learning perspective: From research to action on 31 August 2023. Representatives of international organizations and academia, as well as human rights individual experts and practitioners, will convene to discuss vital aspects of citizenship education within a lifelong learning perspective, shedding light on how it can effectively promote inclusivity, equity, and sustainability.
Central to the meeting’s agenda are topics such as the conceptualization of citizenship education, the importance of citizenship education for a sustainable future, good practices in non-formal education, fostering skills for active citizenship, and the role of citizenship education in transforming education. The meeting will be also an opportunity to present and discuss UNESCO’s overall work on this issue and areas for future actions.
Meeting outcomes will feed into the upcoming UIL publication on citizenship education within a lifelong learning perspective, as well as further dialogue on actions regarding relevant initiatives and strategies for effective implementation.
Through these collective efforts, UIL aims to help realize citizenship education’s potential contribution to the creation of a more just, democratic, and harmonious society for all.
