This FREE online event seeks to explore what it really means to be a modern global citizen. Joining us from around the globe, these four WA Australian of the Year Award Alumni will explore the concept of global citizenship and how we can all become an active global citizen. Hear about taking an active role in your community and working with others to make our planet a more equal, fair and sustainable global society

Abdullahi Alim

2017 WA Young Australian of the Year

Abdullahi Alim leads the World Economic Forum’s network of emerging young leaders, formally known as the Global Shapers across Africa and the Middle East. He works with thousands of young changemakers at the frontlines of creating truly equitable and just societies in areas including education equity, peace and governance and climate action.

To his credit, Abdullahi was conferred the Young Leaders Award by Queen Elizabeth at Buckingham Palace. He is also the WA Young Australian of the Year. Abdullahi was recently appointed to the Board of Trustees at the Queen’s Trust.

Jessica Smith OAM

WA Young Australian of the Year Finalist

Jessica Smith has an incredible story of triumphs and tribulations. Born missing her left arm and then suffering a horrific kitchen accident when she was a toddler sustaining burns to 15% of her body, she defied odds and went on to represent Australian in the sport of swimming for seven years, culminating in representing Australia at the 2004 Paralympic Games.

Jessica is an accomplished motivational speaker and MC, having stood on many platforms throughout schools, universities, businesses and community organisations, including the UN, where she shares her personal journey and highlights the importance of Mental Health awareness, focusing particularly on body image, diversity and eating disorders.

Jessica was awarded one of Australia’s highest honours, the Medal of the Order of Australia for a number of roles within the community, and dedication to sport. Jessica has recently relocated from Australia to Dubai, where she is working as a speaker and advisor on the topics of diversity and inclusion.

Jeffrey Effendi

WA Young Australian of the Year Finalist

Jeff Effendi drives global communications at Google’s Next Billion Users initiative, the team building a more inclusive internet for the next wave of internet users coming online for the first time.

As the Founder and now Board Advisor at DrawHistory, a social impact design agency, Jeffrey has also consulted more than 100 purpose-driven organisations on brand and communications and continues to advise on projects that catalyze conversations around social change.

Previously, Jeffrey was UNICEF Australia’s Young Ambassador and has led the World Economic Forum’s Global Shapers in Perth as its Vice-Curator.

Michael Sheldrick

Finalist in WA’s Young Australian of the Year 2013 and Australian of the Year 2014

Michael Sheldrick is a Co-Founder and Chief Policy and Government Relations Officer at Global Citizen, where he oversees international advocacy campaigns in support of universal sanitation, climate mitigation and adaptation efforts, access to education, food security, gender equality and disease elimination and prevention.

Michael oversees the policy and impact direction of the Global Citizen movement and has worked on campaigns in North America, Europe, India, South Africa and Australia. He has worked with many artists, heads of government and philanthropists including Rihanna, Beyoncé, Usher, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau of Canada, Prime Minister Erna Solberg of Norway, President Cyril Ramaphosa of South Africa, President Akufo-Addo of Ghana, former UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, and former Australian Prime Minister Julia Gillard. He has been instrumental in mobilising political and public support for the Sustainable Development Goals.
